A former coal train stationed at an Aberdeen play park for more than 40 years has undergone a £60,000 refurbishment.
Generations of youngsters have played on the Mr Therm locomotive and its accompanying carriages in Seaton Park since 1974.
It was originally used for transporting coal from Aberdeen harbour, and was first built in Kilmarnock by Andrew Barclay and Sons.
But last summer, after many years of wear and tear, the vintage Mr Therm was taken away for repairs and a fresh lick of paint by contractors David Ogilvie Engineering. It has now been lowered back into place.
The project to fix up the locomotive was organised by Aberdeen City Council and the Friends of Seaton Park Group, and received funding from the Aberdeen Harbour Board in honour of Mr Therm’s past at the Granite City’s docks.
The firm carefully dismantled every piece of the train before painstakingly putting it all back together with its new paint job.
Mr Therm’s carriages also received a makeover, and now boast colourful, nautical designs to help children enjoy their trip to the park.
Seaton councillor Ramsay Milne said: “Everyone is absolutely delighted.
“It’s great that it’s been refurbished and I’m sure it will give the young people in particular many hours of enjoyment.”
The train was carefully lowered back into its rightful place yesterday, and will soon be available for children to play on after the final works are completed at the site.
