An Aberdeen man has been fined after he attacked a “good samaritan” police officer who was trying to help him get home after a Christmas night out.

Andrew Anderson, of Bannermill Place, admitted punching Constable Innes Chalmers on the head on the city’s Beach Boulevard on December 23 last year.

Fiscal depute Karen Dow told the court police had been trying to assist the 24-year-old home after he was found drunk in the city centre at about 1.45am.

As the police were helping move Anderson he struck out his left hand and punched Constable Chalmers.

Defence agent Gregor Kelly said Anderson, who is employed as a property assistant with a leasing company, was on a work’s night out.

Mr Kelly said it was a “familiar tale” as Anderson had drank far more than he was used to, including Jager bombs and other shots.

He said he had little recollection of what had happened on the night but did have a vague memory of thinking police were “manhandling” him.

Mr Kelly said the incident had been a “wake-up call” for Anderson who was ashamed that he had behaved this way towards “good samaritan” police officers who were trying to help him during their busiest time of the year.

Sheriff Christine McCrossan said it was clear that the incident was out of character for Anderson.

She fined him £350.
