As all the best people do, they starred in the Press and Journal on their wedding day.

And now, Bernard and Jacqueline Simpson have returned to the Granite City to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

The Simpsons, who now live in the Leeds area, first met while attending Aberdeen University and tied the knot in a ceremony at King’s College Chapel in 1967.

The pair celebrated their golden anniversary in style last night by returning to the chapel for an evening of music and fun with a number of their original guests – and a few new ones too.

Those in attendance were treated to an organ recital by a professor from the university who created a special programme including a selection of music featured during the original wedding service.

Friends and family were also given the opportunity to pore over a scrapbook of memories from the couple’s big day including letters, pictures and even a small parcel of confetti.

Speaking before the event, Mrs Simpson said: “We have been back to Aberdeen quite a lot through the years but this time it’s for something really special.

“The university have been fantastic, agreeing to let us bring out the original register and helping us pull it all together. There have been a lot of messages going back and forth.”

The couple have enjoyed an eventful few weeks with a dash around Scotland to visit old university chums slotted in around key family events.

Mrs Simpson said: “It’s been a busy time because my eldest daughter was born on our first wedding anniversary and had her own just a short while ago.

“When it’s all over, we’re going to do what we did immediately after our wedding and take a trip to Enniskillen – although this time we’ll be surrounded by family, so that will be really nice.”

A spokesman for Aberdeen University congratulated the couple on 50 years of marriage and wished them all the best for the future.

He added: “We are delighted that Bernard and Jacqueline have returned to the university to mark their golden anniversary, and glad to have helped organise tonight’s celebrations.

“Many of our alumni have forged lifelong relationships and friendships during their time here, and no matter where they are in the world, they will always be considered part of our Aberdeen family.”
