Aberdeen City Council accused of wasting money on staff uniforms

The city council was yesterday accused of wasting money over proposed plans to spend £30,000 on new uniforms for staff.

The local authority has already spent £11,600 on 30 outfits worn by employees working at customer service units around Aberdeen.

The new uniforms, which contain corporate branding, have been been handed out to staff as part of a pilot scheme due to finish early next year.

However, if senior management opts to continue with the plans, it will cost a total of £30,000 to kit out just 75 employees.

The uniforms cost £400 each,

Aberdeen City Council councillor Stephen Flynn, the SNP’s group leader, branded the cost as “exorbitant.”

He said: “On the face of it, this appears to be an entirely unnecessary spend from a Tory-led council which appears to be throwing money down the drain while at the same time preaching cuts.

“Given that these council staff have ID badges I’m at a loss as to why they would be expected to wear identical clothing at an exorbitant cost to the public purse.”

A spokeswoman for the local authority said: “There are often multiple services provided by Aberdeen City Council at customer access points.

“To clarify this initiative includes only staff working for customer service, however this may be a receptionist in some buildings.

“Uniforms are a part of a range that staff can select which includes trousers, jumpers, shirts, blouses, dresses, cardigans, tank tops, blazers and soft shell jackets.”
