Tour Series cycling rides again in Aberdeen

Top professional cyclists will take to the streets of Aberdeen again after the “roaring success” of last year’s visit from the Tour Series.

Thousands lined the city centre streets in May for a day of cycling activities, including races that were broadcast on television.

Organisers of the OVO Energy Tour Series have now confirmed they will be returning to the Granite City on Thursday May 17, as one of ten stops on a nationwide series of events.

Following the success of the 2017 men’s race, an elite women’s round has also been added to the programme.

Race director Mick Bennett said: “We were treated to a beautiful sunny day and really exciting racing when we visited Aberdeen last year, so it makes perfect sense for the OVO Energy Tour Series to return to the city once again.

“The way everybody in Aberdeen got behind the series’ visit was fantastic and I have no doubt that the local support will once again be brilliant, especially with the addition of an elite women’s race.

“With a men’s and women’s race forming part of the night’s schedule, it promises to be a fantastic evening of sporting action.”

Aberdeen is one of just two Scottish cities on this year’s tour, with the cyclists also competing in Motherwell.

Aberdeen City Council co-leader Jenny Laing said: “We are delighted that the OVO Energy Tour Series is set to return.

“The inaugural Aberdeen event in 2017 was outstanding, with people lining the streets to support both the community races and the amazing professional athletes.”
