Broad Street fountain to remain closed until chemical levels reduce

Aberdeen’s Broad Street fountain will remain closed following an inspection yesterday.

The popular feature was shut off at the weekend due to high levels of chemicals in the water.

Aberdeen City Council carries out daily tests on the fountain to check the bromine levels.

A check at the end of last week revealed that the levels were higher than normal -forcing the council to prevent it from operating.

It was reported that part of a bromine probe had broken, resulting in a chemical surge.

A replacement probe was ordered and has now been fitted.

An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “We carry out daily tests to the fountain in Broad Street to ensure water quality is within acceptable levels.

“If it is not, as happened at the end of last week, then the fountain is switched off.

“The system requires time for water to circulate to allow water quality to return to acceptable levels and as such, the decision was taken to turn the fountain off over the weekend.

New Aberdeen fountain turned off after ‘unacceptable’ chemical readings found

“Bromine levels in the fountain water are highly diluted including when readings are found to be higher as they were last week.

“It is hoped that levels will soon return to acceptable levels and as soon as they are, the fountain will be switched back on again.”

The fountain was part of a £3.2 million City Council revamp and has 60 coloured jets that can be set to different speeds.
