Aberdeen will soon be awash with colour as part of a new art initiative.

A selection of doors throughout the Granite City will be transformed into works of art as part of Aberdeen Inspired’s latest project to spruce up the town centre.

The scheme is based on a similar project which took place in Madeira, Portugal, and proved to be a huge success.

Falling under the organisation’s Summer of Art theme, the project will start at Langstane Place and Windmill Brae, and eventually will progress to The Green and Correction Wind.

It is hoped 12 doors in the heart of the city will eventually be brightened up.

Among the artists taking part are Shelagh Swanson, who launched the scheme yesterday by transforming a door on Windmill Brae into a stunning canvas of colour, and local artist, Mary Butterworth, known for her night scenes of the city.

Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: “Our Summer of Art campaign is about making art and culture accessible to all, as well as being a great way to utilise and brighten up spaces in the city centre.

“Everyone at Aberdeen Inspired has been working hard to make these projects a reality and it is fantastic to see the public’s reaction to our ongoing Play Me, I’m Yours initiative.

“We are sure that our Painted Doors project will prove just as popular and add vibrant and fun splashes of colour to the city centre. It will be fantastic to see the artworks pop up on doors throughout the city centre.

“Shelagh’s design on the door at Windmill Brae is stunning and we can’t wait to see what type of designs the other artists come up with. Their response to this project has been incredible and I would like to thank them for giving up their time to make it a reality.”
