A north-east man has been banned from driving for a year after his vehicle went off the road and crashed into a car park.

Jamie Mckenzie appeared in Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday where he admitted driving at excessive speeds on a bend on the A975 Foveran to Newburgh road and losing control of his car.

The court heard how he increased speed after engaging in an argument with his girlfriend.

Another friend, who was inside the car, asked him to slow down as he entered a bend, but he lost control of the vehicle which subsequently went off the road and entered the car park of the site of Wilkie Engineering.

Emergency services were called to the scene and Mckenzie’s girlfriend was transported to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Representing the 19-year-old, defence solicitor Christopher Maitland said: “My client wishes to make an apology, he understands the inevitable consequences of this.

“He is self-employed, working as a landscape gardener and he hopes to be able to continue with this getting lifts to work.

“His girlfriend is pregnant, she has stood by him and he is hoping to regain a licence and move on from this.”

Sheriff Malcolm Garden fined Mckenzie, of Bronieside in Pitmedden, £600 and banned him from driving for a year.

He said: “Even at your young age, you must realise driving must be done with care and attention.

“If you regain a licence, you must not start driving like a lunatic.”
