A mother-of-three whose daughter was knocked down on her way to Inverurie Academy has launched a petition calling for a pedestrian crossing.
Mandy Adam’s daughter Morgan Kirk-Patrick was crossing the town’s Victoria Street when she was struck by a car last Monday morning.
The 13-year-old suffered a sprained ankle after being thrown onto the bonnet of a car.
Following the accident, Mrs Adam said Morgan had been “really lucky” not to have been more badly injured.
She called for a crossing to be put in place and has since started an online petition to garner support from the local community.
More than 140 people have already signed the petition which calls for a 20mph speed restriction and a safe crossing on Victoria Street.
Mrs Adam, who also has daughter Lexie, three, and son Archie, one, wrote on the petition: “Most Inverurie Academy pupils walk to school and back every day and they should have a safe route to school.
“On Monday March 21, my daughter, Morgan, was walking to school as normal when she was hit by a car travelling down Victoria Street towards Wetherspoons.
“Had there been a safe crossing place and a 20mph speed restriction, this would not have happened.
“Thankfully she was very lucky as the car was not travelling at speed but had the driver been going faster or in a bigger vehicle, she certainly would’ve been more seriously hurt.
“We need the council to make this route much safer before someone else gets seriously injured or killed.
“This affects everyone currently at the academy and those who will attend in the future.”
Yesterday, she added: “All children deserve a safe route to school and it is not safe.
“We cannot expect children to look after themselves.
“All the parents I have spoken to are in favour of this.
“It absolutely needs to be done.”
Morgan was crossing the road between the Inverurie Family Resource Centre and the swimming pool when the accident happened.
Aberdeenshire Council’s roads department is carrying out an investigation into the incident.
