Men jailed for raping the same woman after night out

A huge programme of work to improve empty Aberdeen council homes to make space for Ukrainian refugees is underway in Aberdeen.
The rape happened at a flat in Greig Court, Aberdeen

Two sex predators who both violently raped the same woman after a night out have each been jailed for five years.

Karol Grobelny, 33, and Michal Szczepanek, 31, preyed on the victim at a flat in Greig Court, Aberdeen, on August 11 2019.

Car showroom worker Grobelny struck while his wife and family were away at a celebration.

The pair were yesterday sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow.

A total of 13 supporters turned up at the hearing wearing T-shirts with the message “truth, justice, freedom” emblazoned on them.

Lady Stacey handed Grobelny and Szczepanek each the same jail term after they were convicted of rape last month.

Raped after night out

The pair, as well as the victim, had been at a number of pubs in Aberdeen before the attack.

The group ended up back at Grobelny’s home for food and more drinks.

Prosecutors claimed both men had initially groped the woman there.

Grobelny told the trial he later found the woman in his bed with Szczepanel beside her.

He claimed she stated there was “enough space” for him as well.

Grobelny alleged the woman then instigated sexual contact.

His lawyer Michael Anderson put to him: “You have accepted some sexual activity with the woman?”

Grobelny: “That is correct. The fact that it happened while my wife was away … I feel really bad pretty much every day.”

Rapist claimed sex was consensual

But, advocate depute Louise Beattie insisted the woman was preyed upon.

The prosecutor said: “Your evidence is a tissue of lies and you raped her in the way she described.”

Grobelny: “I just know we were close to having sex, but we did not have sex.”

Szczepanek claimed he had consensual sex with the woman.

The court was told that both men- who had been first offenders – maintain their innocence.

Sentencing, Lady Stacey told them: “The effect on the woman has been considerable.

“She was injured and still feels the physical effects now.

“It has affected her confidence, she had to take another job on lower wages and has found it difficult to socialise as well as enter a relationship.

“This is because both of you decided to have sexual intercourse with her which she did not consent to.”

The pair were also put on the sex offenders list.
