A major search has been launched for a hillwalker who is believed to have gone missing while tackling a Munro in Lochaber.
The deputy leader of Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team raised the alarm when he found a note in a car which had been parked in the area for a couple of days saying the man intended to return on Sunday.
Police have named the missing walker as Edward Davies and have appealed for information to help them find the 39-year-old.
Deputy rescue team leader Brian Bathurst said he first saw a white car parked near Glencoe Visitor Centre on Sunday evening.
He said: “I’d been driving up and down the glen a couple of times over the last few days and the vehicle was still there a couple of days later.
“On Wednesday afternoon, I stopped and saw there was a notepad on the dashboard, which said the driver had set out on Sunday to go up Sgùrr na h-Ulaidh and was planning to be back the same day.
“It also said he was wearing a blue jacket.”
Mr Bathurst said he and 11 other team members went out searching for Mr Davies and a coastguard helicopter was also called out.
He said: We went up to the area he had mentioned in his note and the helicopter searched that area as well.
“We searched as much of the mountain as we could and climbed into a few gullies, exploring the potential hazards alongside the path.”
He said there were a number of different access points for the 3,261ft mountain, but there was an obvious path line on the summit.
He added that the path on the Munro was not particularly dangerous, but there was a lot of steep ground around it.
Mr Bathurst said he had not checked the car sooner because vehicles were often left overnight by people camping in the area.
A police spokeswoman said Mr Davies had been driving a white Toyota Aygo hire car, which was found parked to the south of the visitor centre.
She added that his friends and family also became concerned when they had not heard from for a few days.
She said: “It is believed that he was a very experienced hiker and it was out of character for him to be out of contact for so long.
“His family is aware that he is missing.”
She said Glencoe MRT carried out searches on Wednesday night and further searches were carried out in the area yesterday involving Glencoe and Oban MRTs, police officers, dogs and a coastguard search and rescue helicopter.
The spokeswoman last night said the search would continue today and into the weekend if he was not found.
Mr Davies, who is from the Hampshire area, is described as 5ft 11in and of slim build, with cropped dark brown hair, which is longer on top.
He is likely to be wearing a blue waterproof jacket.
Anyone who saw a man matching his description in the Glencoe area has been urged to contact police on 101.
