Del Amitri frontman to headline Inverness music festival

The former frontman of Del Amitri has been announced as the headline act for an Inverness music festival.

Justin Currie will bring his current band the Pallbearers to the Northern Roots festival at Bogbain Farm in June.

Del Amitri have had five top 10 UK albums over their career and a number of hit singles, including “Nothing Ever Happens” and “Always the Last to Know”.

The booking came about through the long-standing friendship of the singer festival organiser Bruce MacGregor, himself a well-known musician with Blazin Fiddles.

Mr MacGregor said: “In 2004 I put together a show with Justin, Colin MacIntyre from the Mull Historical Society and Eddi Reader.

“It was a show to highlight Blazin Fiddles ability to provide strings and arrangements in a very different world of pop and it worked a treat.

“It was amazing to work with guys of that calibre and see how they operated.”

Northern Roots has been running since 2009 and prides itself in discovering and championing new Scottish musical talent.

It was initially established to highlight upcoming folk and roots music but has since expanded across the spcectrum.

The Pallbearers head a line-up which will include up and coming acts such as Be Charlotte, Pronto Mama and the Elephant Sessions.

They will join more established acts such as the multi-award winning Lau and the iconic Rab Noakes, celebrating his 50th year as a musician.

Mr MacGregor added: “It’s a festival that prides itself in booking brilliant acts. I’m lucky in my profession as a musician and a radio presenter to meet and hear so many superb musicians and this is our chance to get them on our very own festival.

“It’s really a festival for music lovers – there’s no sideshows or gimmicks – its music, music, music, all the way.

“We’re not interested in going mainstream; we’ve got everything from electronica to gypsy jazz, we’re just keen to promote the best Scotland has. Scottish music in all its forms has never been so vibrant and creative.”

The festival will take place at Bogbain over June 23-24.
