Fireworks and bonfires bring out big crowds in north-east

Members of the public gather to watch the bonfire in Peterhead.

The skies across the north-east were illuminated at the weekend with a series of successful bonfires and fireworks displays, which entertained large crowds across the region.

The celebrations started in Mintlaw on Friday with the annual Aden-een fireworks show which was attended by thousands of people.

This year, youngsters from communities, including Peterhead and Fraserburgh, had organised a storytelling event at Aden Country Park, based on the works of Scots author Robert Louis Stevenson.

Fire dancers from Aberdeen University also attended.

On Saturday, pyrotechnic shows were staged in such places as Banff, St Combs and Rosehearty.

A spokeswoman for Rosehearty’s bonfire described their event as a “massive success”, echoing the setiments of those who attended.

And fireworks celebrations continued into yesterday.

Despite high winds for most the day, one of the largest events of the weekend took place in Peterhead with the annual Gadle Braes bonfire.

Such was the size of the event at the port that roads had to be closed to allow for everyone to attend safely.

Elsewhere, there were special displays in Maud, Cruden Bay and Buchanhaven Harbour.

Last night, local councillor Stephen Calder praised the community initiative shown to run similar events across Buchan.

He said: “It’s always good to see communities coming together to run these sort of events.

“But it’s also important that they observe safety rules, so that everyone can enjoy them.”

Both the fire service and coastguard had issued fresh safety advice, in advance of the various celebrations, to curb any unnecessary call-outs.

Buchan’s Coastguard team had asked members of the public not to fire maritime flares into the sky after a spate of false alarms in recent weeks.

The fire service, meanwhile, asked the public to respect its firefighters after incidents last year when rockets were launched in the direction of appliances.
