The organiser of a hugely successful annual charity event has been named one of the UK’s top fundraisers.
Peterhead’s Relay for Life has secured more than £1.4million in the five years since Lorraine Coleman was inspired by her own battle with breast cancer to help other sufferers.
The latest edition of what is now the biggest such event in the country, last weekend, raked in £150,000 for Cancer Research UK.
And now Mrs Coleman has been recognised for her incredible efforts by being named runner-up in the Now Mrs Coleman has been named as runner up in the best volunteer category at the prestigious National Fundraising Awards.
Some 24 spent 24 hours taking part in the relay in Lord Catto park at the weekend and more than 700 spectators from across Aberdeenshire travelled to the Blue Toon to watch.
A candlelit procession was also held to remember those who have lost their battle with the deadly disease.
A spokesman for the awards said: “Lorraine’s incredible determination, enthusiasm and leadership skills, have allowed her to make a unique impact in her community of Peterhead and beyond.
“Just two weeks after completing her treatment for breast cancer, Lorraine participated as a team member in Relay for Life Peterhead. Three years later, she took up the position of event chair.
“She has united the community’s passion for fundraising, leading the Relay for Life Peterhead to raise over £1.4 million in just 5 years.”
Mrs Coleman was only beaten to the top prize by Ben Smith, who ran 401 marathons in 401 days to raise £300,000 for Kidscape and Stonewall.
