Heavy rain failed to dampen the spirits of visitors at a safety event in Peterhead at the weekend.

Local organisations joined forces with the emergency services to promote safer living through a series of activities and workshops in the town’s Drummers Corner hosted by Modo on Chapel Street.

The Peterhead Community Safety Day was hailed as a success with passers-by stopping to speak to various services and get advice.

Residents were given the chance to get into emergency service vehicles and learn about how their equipment is used.

Thirteen-year-old Sophie Blackwell attended the event.

She said: “It was interesting to see what the inside of the emergency vehicles look like.

“It was a good experience.”

And Kaleb Whyte, 14, added: “It’s good to have the experience of being in a police van with handcuffs on as it shows us that being arrested isn’t glamorous.”

Community warden Mick Chappell said it was hoped that the event would become an annual fixture.

He said: “It’s great to see all the services come together to provide a fun filled informative day for members of the public.

“Hopefully we can continue doing it every year to make it bigger and better for the people of Peterhead.”

Services were on hand to promote safety and inform visitors of all the local initiatives available to help keep them safe.

Buchan Community Safety Group member Anne Allan said: “We saw today as an opportunity to promote our work and highlight some of our current projects – alcohol awareness, personal safety and litter prevention.

“There is a lot going on but often people seem unaware of what is happening in their community.”

Vanessa Case from the Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership, felt it was a  “worthwhile” day.

She said: “We’ve been here sharing information about drink and drug use in the area and it’s been a really busy morning.

“Lots of folks have been through and its great to see the kids enjoying the activities as well as their parents being able to learn a little bit more about what’s happening in the community.”
