Aberdeen students have always been a vocal bunch.

Through the decades, students have been forming protests, picket lines and parades across the city to ensure that they are seen and heard.

With all the protests and strike action taking place at the moment, let’s take a look back at some student demonstrations in Aberdeen through the decades. From student loans to free milk, Aberdonian students throughout the year have strived to make their voices heard.

1971- An Aberdeen University student picket line after former PM Margaret Thatcher did away with free milk.
1989 – Aberdeen University student Angus Robertson joins the protest against student loans.
1984 – More than 150 enrolled at Aberdeen College of Commerce invaded Woodhill House to protest over cuts in student grants.
1973 – Hundreds marched from Marischal College in response to the level of student grants.
1986 – Grant and benefit cuts prompted these protesters to march along the High Street, Old Aberdeen.
1977 – An Aberdeen University staff member negotiates his way through a sit-in protest.
1979 – Young people with banners and placards against plans to increase the fees of overseas students.
1976 – Students of Aberdeen College of Education called for an increase in student association fees to pay for a sabbatical for student president.
1977 – Action over Aberdeen University’s refusal to sell shares in companies with South African dealings.
1971 – Demonstrators braved the rain to parade up Union Street after their rally in Mitchell Hall.
1986 – Vocal opposition to the government’s latest round of grant and benefit cuts.
1982- Disgruntled students block the carriageway in Union Street as they march on the Music Hall.
1989 – University students made clear their feelings on government plans to introduce loans.
1979 – Government plans to increase the fees of overseas students led around 1,200 to march through the city.
