Kenny McLean: Bring on Messi

Aberdeen midfielder Kenny McLean hopes the Dons can continue to contribute to the national cause in 2018.

The 25-year-old was one of three Dons who were part of Malky Mackay’s squad for last week’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Holland at Pittodrie.

On-loan Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie impressed on his first start for his country, while Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie was an unused substitute.

Scotland are not expected to play again until March with the Scottish FA in discussions to take on Argentina in a friendly in Morocco.

McLean would love to line up against the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero – and the midfielder hopes he isn’t the only Dons player in the squad.

He said: “Obviously, it was disappointing for Graeme not to get on against Holland.

“But it was great to have three Aberdeen players in the squad.

“The rest of the Scottish boys in our squad should look at that and try to push to get promoted into this.

“It was great to be in this environment and an honour to pull on the jersey.

“It is an honour to be in the squad and exciting for the future.

“It was excellent to be involved in the match. I thought it was a really good performance from the boys We were up against a top-quality side and I felt we were very unlucky to lose.

“We caused them some real problems at times and we were unlucky not to get anything from it.”

McLean was not surprised to see Dons team-mate Ryan Christie impress on the international stage with a composed display on his international debut.

He said: “I was delighted for Ryan to get his first cap. We are so lucky to have him at Aberdeen, on loan from Celtic.

“He has so much quality and we are delighted to have him.

“Hopefully, he can keep producing the same level of performances. He has been excellent this season and he showed that again against Holland. He played very well.

“He is only 22 and winning his first cap but you wouldn’t have guessed that by the way he played.

“He is quality and he is the future.” McLean, meanwhile, remains hopeful that Dons manager Derek McInnes, who has been linked with the vacant Rangers job, remains at the helm at Pittodrie.

He said: “I hope he is here for the next game against Motherwell.

“I think everyone involved in the club will be feeling the same.

“We can’t dictate what is going to happen there.

“There is loads of speculation over the whole thing.

“But I’m sure he will come in on Monday ready to go and focused on preparing the team for Saturday.

“He has done a very good job, so it is really no surprise other clubs are looking at him when they need a manager.

“It was the same in the summer when there wwere English Championship clubs wanting him.

“It shows the job he has done here and hopefully that continues.”
