Josh Peters keen to keep Buckie Thistle at top of the table

Josh Peters, right, wants to help Buckie Thistle stay at the top of the Breedon Highland League.

Josh Peters helped fire Buckie Thistle to the top of the Breedon Highland League and is determined to stay there when they face Formartine United.

The striker bagged a hat-trick in the Jags’ 5-1 win over Keith on Wednesday with the result taking Graeme Stewart’s side to the summit on goal difference ahead of Brechin City.

Although Buckie have played a game more than the Hedgemen, Peters is pleased to be top of the division, although he expects a stern test at North Lodge Park today against fifth-placed Formartine.

The 26-year-old said: “Being top puts pressure on other teams to make use of their game in hand.

“If they don’t then the table doesn’t change, we need to keep getting results.

“We’ve not dropped a lot of points and we can’t afford to drop points because Brechin are looking solid and don’t look like dropping many points.

“These are games you need to win because they can show people how good a team we can be. Formartine aren’t far behind us and will be a very tough game.”

Jonny Smith is looking forward to Formartine’s clash with Buckie.

United are only five points behind Buckie, but Jonny Smith says the Pitmedden side aren’t getting carried away when it comes to a possible title challenge.

The 34-year-old striker, who netted twice in their midweek win at Deveronvale, added: “I think people have written us off all season and I don’t see this game being any different.

“I think Buckie will start as favourites, there’s no pressure on us,

“We’re doing well and we’re happy flying under the radar, we’re not getting carried away.

“If we’re in the position with half a dozen games to go we can start speaking about challenging, but not right now.”
