Ross County defender Andrew Davies believes his side can take inspiration from the perspiration of Saturday’s spirited 0-0 draw against Rangers to finish above the Light Blues in the Premiership this season.

County returned from their first trip to Ibrox in the club’s 87-year history with a creditable point which keeps them sixth in the table, just a point behind the Gers.

Mark Warburton’s side have made an uninspiring start to the campaign following promotion from the Championship.

Asked if County were capable of finishing above the Gers, former Middlesbrough player Davies said: “I don’t see why we can’t. We have belief we can compete with teams such as Rangers and this was a prime example.

“Last season was fantastic, but it’s the same in any job, we want to push on and improve on what we did last time.

“It’s just about sticking to what got us to where we were last year. I genuinely feel it’s hard work, we work and train really hard through the week and have a lot of respect for each other.

“If that stays there’s no reason we can’t do better than last year. Our aim is fourth or fifth, we want to finish higher than last year or it’s a failure in my eyes.”

Davies hailed County’s resilience after the Dingwall side were forced to withstand large periods of pressure to salvage their point and the 31-year-old added: “It was a tough day. They played really well and moved the ball really well, but it wasn’t anything we didn’t expect.

“We knew they were going to come out in force but we were disciplined and organised. We were hard to break down and defended well.

“They’re a good team. No matter what happened during the week, they’ve got good players who can open us up at any point.

“Our aim was to try to stay focused and concentrate for the full 90 minutes. I was a little bit disappointed we didn’t show what we’re like on the ball. We’re a very good team when we get the ball down and pass.”
