Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie wins first cap but Alex McLeish’s Scots go down 2-0 in Peru

A Christian Cueva penalty and a Jeffersen Farfan strike either side of the break earned Peru a 2-0 victory over a depleted Scotland in Lima.

Cueva drilled home from the spot in the 37th minute after Dons defender Scott McKenna was penalised for handball and Lokomotiv striker Farfan added a second after the interval.

There were four new caps in an inexperienced-looking line-up for the visitors with Millwall goalkeeper Jordan Archer, Kilmarnock defender Stephen O’Donnell,  Hibernian’s Lewis Stevenson and Dylan McGeouch all starting for Alex McLeish’s side.

Aberdeen defender McKenna and Norwich City’s Kenny McLean also started with Dons captain Graeme Shinnie, who had missed his stag do in Marbella to be part of the squad, named on the bench.

Peru, heading to their first World Cup in 36 years, were roared on by a vociferous crowd at the Estadio Nacional in Lima.

It was a debut to forget for goalkeeper Archer, who put his defence under needless pressure for the first goal by rushing out of his goal with McKenna penalised for handling Farfan’s goal-bound attempt.

That was frustrating for the Scots who had looked well-organised and were keeping the  the Peruvians at bay.

Farfan should have doubled the advantage two minutes before the break when he fired over.

The Millwall stopper also appeared to be at fault for Peru’s second goal when Farfan’s low drive trickled under him three minutes into the second period.

Shinnie, Chris Cadden and Lewis Morgan all came off the bench to make their Scotland debuts with Oli McBurnie going closest to pulling a goal back for the visitors.

Next up for Scotland is another international friendly against Mexico in Mexico City on Saturday.
