A man has been left in a critical condition after a car crashed on a north-east street.

The 36-year-old was taken to hospital on Friday after a blue Honda Jazz smashed into a street light on Peterhead’s Landale Road.

Police immediately launched an investigation into the incident to establish how the man’s car came to leave the road.

And last night they announced he was still fighting for his life.

Neighbours next to where the car crashed said they were unable to get into their homes while police and fire crews cleared debris from the road.

One added that it looked as if the driver had broken his legs in the crash and also suffered “serious” head injuries.

A spokeswoman for the police described his injuries as “life-threatening”.

She said: “As a result of the collision, the driver was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he is currently being treated for life-threatening injuries.”

Officers now investigating the crash are appealing for anyone who may have seen the car driving around Peterhead on Friday to make contact with them.

Sergeant Rob Warnock, from the force’s road policing unit, said: “Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are at an early stage and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the blue Honda Jazz prior to the collision, to contact Police Scotland on 101.”

Firefighters had to be called to the scene, which was visible through the established cordon on Friday, to make sure there was no danger to members of the public or rescue crews.

They were not required, however, to cut the driver free from his car.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “One appliance was mobilised to the scene and firefighters made the vehicle safe.”

Local councillor Alan Buchan said it was fortunate no one else was injured.

The crash happened at lunchtime near to two of the port’s schools.

He said: “I don’t know the circumstances around the crash, but obviously with the amount of kids that are on the go there at lunchtimes, drivers have to be on their best care.”
