Fears raised that gentleman’s club advert could give impression Aberdeen is “wild west town”

Concerns have been raised that advertisements for an Aberdeen gentleman’s club, which is targeting Offshore Europe delegates, could give the impression the city is “some kind of wild west town”.

Private Eyes has installed a number of large signs in Union Street during late evening hours.

Owner, Tony Cochrane, confirmed the campaign was launched this week to attract visitors attending the Offshore Europe oil and gas industry event.

However, local councillor, Martin Greig, has written to council officers seeking to warn the business against what he described as “unauthorised flyposting in the city centre”.

Mr Greig said: “Aberdeen runs the risk of gaining an unpleasant reputation.

“It is appalling to have to explain to children and young people what this is about.

“We are a city that is orientated towards families, and we take seriously the care of vulnerable and impressionable people. This kind of offence cannot be tolerated.

“The offenders must be under the mistaken impression that this is Las Vegas or some kind of wild west town.

“This display really undermines the efforts we have been making to ensure the city is an enjoyable and responsibly place to socialise.

“It is all the more disappointing at a time when we are welcoming so many visitors.”

This week also marks Aberdeen University’s fresher’s festival.

Mr Cochrane responded he had received no complaints from the council and claimed he always ensured his business operated within the regulations.

He said: “The signs are put up for an hour a night at peak time, so they’re not being flyposted, just wrapped around a few poles for an hour and then taken away again.

“They’re put up beside the PR staff who hand out the flyers, it’s just a novelty really for oil week.

“I think somebody has a bee in their bonnet.

“We’ve heard nothing from the council, but if this is an issue, I would like to make sure that it wouldn’t just affect us – circuses and party political people put boards up as well.

“But if there is a legal problem, please tell us and we will stick by the rules.”
