Footpath to be closed for four months as part of flood protection scheme in north-east town

The footpath will be closed as part of £16m flood prevention works after the River Carron burst its banks, most recently in 2012.
The footpath will be closed as part of £16m flood prevention works after the River Carron burst its banks, most recently in 2012.

A Stonehaven footpath will be closed for four months to allow work on the town’s £16 million flood protection scheme to continue.

The path which links Dunnottar Avenue to the White Bridge will be closed from Monday until the end of September to allow site access, meaning a detour for pedestrians.

Those heading for the Invercarron Resource Centre, St John’s Church and Abbeyfield House will now have to either walk via Allardice Street or the Green Bridge.

Aberdeenshire Council has apologised for any inconvenience the closure may cause.

The town was devastated by serious floods in 2009 and 2012 when the River Carron burst its banks.

The White Bridge, which has been a fixture of the town for more than 140 years, was dismantled and removed last month.

The C-listed structure will be refurbished and protected until it can be installed back across the Carron.
