A woman has died after her car overturned in a horrific crash on a north-east road.

Emergency services were called to the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, near Coachford, just after 7.20am.

The crash involving a silver Dacia Duster and a dark grey Volvo XC60.

Police said the 20-year-old driver of the silver car died at the scene.

Her car landed on its roof near the junction with Windyraw, while the Volvo – which had three men inside – came to a stop facing inwards.

The three men, two aged 22 and one 48-year-old, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The road was shut for several hours while collision inspectors worked to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the tragedy.

Officers are now appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Sergeant Andy Ramsay, from the roads unit, urged anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the cars leading up to it, to contact them.

He said: “Our thoughts at this difficult time are with the friends and family of those involved.

“The investigation into the cause of the collision is under way.

“In order to assist in piecing together the circumstances leading to the collision we would urge any person who has not yet been spoken to by the police and has seen the collision or either vehicle prior to the collision, or has any dashcam footage to contact police on 101.”
