A new Aberdeen supermarket will be allowed to sell alcohol, despite objections from nearby retailers.

Tesco will open a new Express store at the former Poundstretcher site on 43 to 45 Union Street.

But to sell booze, the firm first had to receive permission from the local authority’s licensing board.

Tesco’s application drew a letter of objection from James and George Collie Solicitors – who represent the 24-hour shops a few doors along on Union Street and on Market Street.

The letter read: “Both consider that the area surrounding the subject of application are significantly over-provided.

“They find no evidence of their customers asking for items that are not already sold within their premises or in the area.”

Solicitor Audrey Ferry, representing Tesco, said these were not legitimate reasons for objection – as the board already had agreed that the city centre didn’t have a policy ruling out the over-provision of alcohol sellers.

She added that the opinions of customers were not considered a valid reason under licensing law.

She said: “There are a number of new licensed premises in the area and student accommodation.

“The board has found there is no over-provision in the entire locality.”

The lawyer said that between 20 and 22 jobs would be created from the new shop, and the Marischal Square office development would mean there is more demand from customers.

Councillors unanimously granted the licence.
