Trees surrounding the site of the former Peterculter Paper Mill could be chopped down.
Resident Henry Duncan has applied for planning permission to potentially fell a number of trees located on a steep bank below North Deeside Road and north of Kennerty Farm.
He claims some neighbours have expressed safety concerns about some of the trees, “particularly in light of recent increasing incidence of extreme weather events.”
The 18 trees in question are adjacent to Culter Den, on land which includes many hundred trees of various types. Many would likely have been planted in the 1800s in the early days of Peterculter Paper Mill.
In his application, Mr Duncan states: “The original paper mill site was redeveloped for housing in the 1980s and there have been some recent instances of trees blowing over and limbs breaking, particularly due to an increasing incidence of extreme weather events.
“A number of concerns have been raised by neighbouring homeowners and we are keen to secure consent to allow appropriate action to be taken, ideally before the trees come into full foliage.”
Struan Dalgleish, a chartered forester and environmentalist, was consulted and recommended crowning or pruning some of the mature trees.
Planners will make a decision in the coming weeks.
