Jack Hendry was a pillar of the Aberdeenshire community he served in a multitude of roles.

Mr Hendry, who has died at the age of 95, was often described as “Mr Inverurie” for his boundless enthusiasm and willingness to throw himself into any local cause

In 1987, he was elected to the Rotary Club of Inverurie and despite being 62-years-old, his “boundless energy” was noticed by all.

Stuart Watson, of Inverurie Rotary Club, said he was usually always the first to volunteer for “any task going”, earning him the nickname “Jack ‘I’ll dee it’ Hendry”.

Mr Watson said: “He served the club as sports officer and club correspondent in turn, and since its inception in the early 2000s, was an integral part of Inverurie Rotary Glee Club, where his Doric recitations were greatly enjoyed.

“And regardless of his advancing years, Jack also enjoyed the challenges of the walking group along with his colleagues from Rotary.”

Mr Hendry served as chairman for the Inverurie and District Round Table and was one of its founding members.

He frequently attended the meetings of Inverurie 41 Club and often performed at their annual Burns suppers.

A family man, Mr Hendry spent the last eight years of his “beloved Jessie’s” life looking after her before she died in 2004.

He was extremely proud of his son David, who followed in his footsteps by joining the Aberdeen and District Master Plumbers Federation, of which he was once president.

Within the community, Mr Hendry served with many organisations including the Doric Society, the Reminiscence Group, Colony Park, and the Men’s Shed and played a prominent role in his local community centre.

He was also honorary president of the Heritage Society and would give talks on old Inverurie at the “drop of a hat”.

He is survived by his children, Ruth, David and Jacqueline, their spouses, children and grandchildren, who will “remember him with great affection”.

Mr Watson added: “We have been blessed indeed to have enjoyed the friendship of one of Inverurie’s great characters who, after a long and busy life, has gone on at last to higher service.”
