Aberdeen-based materials firm ASCO has urged other companies to donate early to their chosen charities in their time of need.

Every year, the company and its staff raise funds for good causes through activities such as golf outings, quiz nights, raffles and an annual ball.

With the pandemic putting greater than ever pressure on charities, their services and resources, it has decided to hand-over all the money currently in the ASCO Lifestyle Aberdeen fund early.

The Peterhead-based charity, Shirley’s Space, was awarded £6,500 to help support changes to the its operation as online messaging and phonecalls replace visits to its base at Crimond Medical and Community Hub.

A further £6,000 has been donated to Mental Health Aberdeen, to help the organisation continue with its counselling and information helpline.

ASCO Lifestyle Aberdeen member, Janice Murray, said: “The fund was created to give assistance and support to local charities, employees and the wider community.

“It is hard to imagine circumstances when that support might be needed more than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Donations are traditionally made on an annual basis, but the ASCO Lifestyle committee has made the decision to donate all available funds to our chosen charities, in order to help continuity of their vital services.

“Of course, we appreciate that ASCO is not alone in its on-going charitable activity, but we are urging companies who read this to consider early donations to their chosen charities.

“It’s going to make a big difference to those you support.”
