Charity for older people expands in the Mearns

An Aberdeenshire charity will be able to reach more people during lockdown thanks to new funding.

For nearly 20 years, the Mearns and Coastal Healthy Living Network has been supporting older people across Aberdeenshire.

Due to the outbreak, the charity has rapidly adapted to create a new telephone service, deliver food and prescriptions and even offer gardening services in line with Scottish Government guidelines.

In addition to this, new support has been offered to adults and families under 50 years of age who are vulnerable, thanks in part to a £4,842 grand from Foundation Scotland’s Response, Recovery and Resilience Fund.

Jane Mitchell, manager at Mearns and Coastal Healthy Living Network said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response from local people offering to help and have recruited a team of new volunteers to deliver our existing volunteer-led services.

“They provide much-needed support for people living in the towns, villages and rural communities of Kincardine and Mearns.

“The new funding will enable us to expand our shopping service and prescription delivery service for those who are self-isolating and shielding at this time.

“It will also allow us to develop our new Friendly Call telephone service, which provides a regular telephone call from a familiar volunteer to anyone in the area who is at increased risk of loneliness and isolation during lockdown.”
