The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning level for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to amber on Friday.

It will be in place from midnight tonight until 3pm tomorrow.

In response to the announcement, Aberdeen City Council has been making preparations for expected flooding across the city.

Officers have been clearing storm drains to deal with the water when it arrives.

The council has asked residents in flood-prone areas to prepare their own flood defenses including sandbags or door flood stops.

They have warned that they will only be issuing people with sandbags who are in immediate need.

The Met Office’s decision to upgrade the warning comes after a yellow warning was issued from 3pm to 6pm on Thursday.

Aberdeen City Council’s Christmas tree switch-on ceremony which was planned for Thursday evening, it has been cancelled due to the weather.

What should people expect on Friday?

However, the Met Office has warned things could get worse.

In a statement they said:

  • Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.
  • Some fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life.
  • Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely.
  • Spray and flooding leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
  • A good chance some communities will be cut off due to flooded roads.
  • Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses are possible.

Due to the rainfall on Thursday, ferries were cancelled and parts of Aberdeenshire were flooded.

The Scottish Environmental Protection agency also issued flood alerts across the area
