A motorcyclist has died following a three vehicle pile-up on a busy Aberdeen road.

The 27-year-old, named locally as Damian Piotrowski, had been riding a black Yamaha R6 bike when he collided with a black Vauxhall Adam and a silver Volkswagen Caravelle campervan.

The incident took place on the city’s Great Northern Road at around noon on Saturday close to the roads junction with Clifton Road and the Aberdeen Northern Hotel.

Emergency services were called to the scene but paramedics could not save Mr Piotrowski.

Last night floral tributes were laid out close to Lilybank Place by the victim’s friends and family.

Flickering candles spelling out the young man’s name and the year he was born were also put down at the scene.

Mr Piotrowski is believed to have originally come from Poland, and has lived in the north-east with his family for a number of years in the Bon Accord Street and Mastrick areas.

Last night a former neighbour said: “He was a really top guy, always kept himself to himself, and was always very polite.

“It’s such a shame that something like this has happened to somebody so young.”

Last night officers asked the public to get in contact if they witnessed the crash.

Sergeant Malcolm Kinross of the divisional road policing unit said: “We are dealing with a tragic incident and our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the motorcyclist.

“At the time of the accident the road was busy and I believe a number of people may have seen the accident or stopped at the scene of the accident.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have any information regarding the accident to phone the police on 101.”

Elsewhere across the north-east, a series of other crashes caused traffic chaos and resulted in multiple injuries.

Three people were taken to hospital on Saturday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash on the A90 Aberdeen-Stonehaven road.

One man and two women were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by ambulance crews following the smash, which took place close to the Shell petrol station at around 5pm.

Their injuries are not believed to be serious.

Yesterday a 26-year-old man was charged after a crash between a white Vauxhall Astra and a police van on the A947 Turriff to Banff Road.

The incident took place at around 8.40am.

Nobody was seriously hurt in the collision.
