The chief executive of Aberdeen City Council has been slated by Unite the Union for her “glowing” tribute to the local authority’s former infrastructure director.
It was announced on Friday that Pete Leonard – who was in the pivotal role when an inquiry found the ashes of babies and adults were routinely mixed at the city’s crematorium – had resigned from his post after 12 years.
Commenting on his departure, Angela Scott said: “On behalf of the council, I would like to thank Pete for over 12 years of service during which time the council has faced a number of significant challenges.
“As a member of the Corporate Management Team he has helped steer the organisation through those challenges.
“I wish Pete well for the future.”
However, Unite confirmed it has written to Mrs Scott, criticising her “glowing” statement about Mr Leonard.
Regional officer Tommy Campbell said: “Several of our members contacted us following the chief executive’s statement.
“They want to know why a director who was subject to severe public criticism – and also presumably was subject to the disciplinary process for his inappropriate behaviour – has been given such a glowing reference.
“We see this as another example of the ‘us and them’ culture at the city council – where ordinary workers are dealt with harshly, while the failings of senior managers are glossed over.”
When asked for a response last night, Aberdeen City Council said they would not be commenting further on the matter at this time.
