A child found a knife in a playground of an Aberdeen primary school during break-time.

The pupil was playing at Hazlehead Primary School last Thursday morning when they spotted the weapon and handed it to a member of staff.

In a letter to parents, school leaders said the knife “was not present” when staff carried out their daily check on the playground earlier in the day.

Councillors have praised the school for handling the incident well, but called on Aberdeen City Council to investigate how the knife got there.

The council has not said if it will investigate, though a spokesman said it has not informed police as the knife was found discarded.

School leaders wrote to parents to say: “A small knife was found this morning at break-time within school grounds. This was handed in to a member of staff immediately.

“The senior management team have spoken to all classes about this and to inform pupils that it has been dealt with appropriately.”

It added: “Please be reassured daily checks are made in the school grounds, however, this was not present on the check made this morning.”

A council spokesman said: “A discarded knife was spotted on Thursday by a pupil at the perimeter fence between Hazlehead School and the adjoining public footpath and it was reported to a member of staff who disposed of the item safely.

“The matter was reported to senior managers in line with our anti-knife policy.”
