A teenager has died following a two-car crash on an Aberdeenshire road on Saturday.

Named locally as Ben Waterfield, the 17 year old was a passenger in a silver Citroen C2, which crashed with a blue Seat Leon.

He died in hospital after suffering serious head injuries.

Emergency services were called to the A947 between Dyce and Newmachar early on Saturday morning, where a blue Seat Leon and a silver Citroen C2 had collided.

Four people were subsequently taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, after the incident which took place near the Swailend bridge.

The three others were described as “walking wounded”.

A spokesman for the force said: “Police Scotland can confirm that following a two vehicle collision on the A947 Newmachar to Dyce road, Aberdeenshire, a 17-year-old man has now sadly died.

“The collision, between a blue Seat Leon and a silver Citroen C2, happened at about 2.15am on Saturday, March 12.

“The four occupants of the cars were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following the collision. However, the 17-year-old passenger of the silver Citroen died today as a result of his injuries.

“Anyone who saw the collision or either of these vehicles on the road prior to the incident is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.”

On Saturday, the two damaged cars could be been at the side of the road.

The roof of the silver Citreon had been completely torn off while the blue Seat was mounted on to the roadside.

A spokeswoman for the SFRS said one person had to be cut free from their vehicle, but couldn’t confirm which car it was.

She said: “Two appliances were in attendance. We used hydraulic cutting gear, because one person was trapped in the car.”

The road was closed with a diversion in place, but reopened later in the morning.

Councillor Martin Ford, who represents East Garioch, described the incident as a tragedy.

He said: “I am very, very sorry to hear this.

“Obviously, it’s devastating news for his family and friends.

“Naturally, my thoughts are with them.”
