Mountain rescue teams battled blizzard conditions to rescue a walker stranded on a Highland mountain.

Members of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team were called out last night to find the man who was stuck at around 3,000ft up Carn Ban Mor, a Munro-height mountain in the Glen Feshie area.

The walker had succumbed to bad weather and the challenges of navigation in a blizzard.

The coast guard rescue helicopter made strenuous attempts to get to the casualty, then to drop the team off as high as possible, but in the end was thwarted by clag and snow.

A post on the CMRT Facebook page reads: “We were getting quite concerned for the casualty. He had had cut the laces off his boots because both his boots and his feet were frozen. It sounded like he was in a bad way and it was proving really difficult to get to him

“In the end, a party of Cairngorm team members had to climb up from the valley to the summit of the hill to locate and rescue the walker. The helicopter crew kept trying to reach the stranded walker through the night, but the weather was simply too bad.”

The rescue effort took nine hours and the team were finished at 3am.
