A 35 year-old man has died after plunging into a Highland river.
The unidentified male was gorge walking at Dundonnell river shortly after 3pm yesterday before falling in.
HM Coastguard received the distress call at 3.30pm sparking a major response from emergency personnel from across the north.
Coastguard rescue teams from Gairloch, Ullapool, Loch Ewe and Achiltibuie all dispatched to the scene alongside the Coastguard Rescue helicopter.
Firefighters and police were also on hand to search for the missing walker alongside Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team.
Despite their efforts, police confirmed this morning the man had sadly died.
A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 35-year-old man has died following an incident on the Dundonnell River on Sunday, August 6.
“Concern was raised for the man shortly after 3pm after he was seen entering the water.
“Officers from Police Scotland, Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, local Coastguard personnel and the Coastguard helicopter all attended.
“Sadly the man’s body was recovered from the river a short time later.
“His next of kin are aware and a report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal, as is standard procedure.”
