Lochaber police carry out inquiries after reports of men approaching children

Lochaber police are carrying out inquiries after reports on social media referred to men in a van approaching children in the Caol area.

This information had not been reported to police but officers are now seeking to establish the full circumstances based on what has been posted on social media.

An incident was reported to police in relation to a man who briefly spoke to a group of children in the Upper Achintore area on Saturday September 8.

Other than this brief conversation there was no further contact between the children and this man, who is currently unidentified.

Inspector Isla Campbell said: “Social media is a central part of our lives nowadays and when used responsibly it can be a useful tool for sharing information.

“However, I would ask any parent who has concerns about people their children have come into contact with to report it to police in the first instance, rather than posting on social media.

“It is understandable that you want to protect your children but people should be aware of the wider implications of a social media post which could raise fears unnecessarily.

“I can reassure people that we take each report extremely seriously. However, the vast majority of reports we receive prove to be innocent – it is extremely rare that a person will have sinister intentions.

“I would urge anyone who has first-hand information about any suspicious activity to report it to us by calling 101 or speaking to any police officer in the first instance.”
