Expect delays on the A82… But new roundabout will be worth the wait!

Work is to begin next month on replacing traffic lights on the A82 Inverness to Glasgow Road in Fort William with a mini-roundabout.

The improvements at Inverlochy Junction are scheduled to start on Sunday April 17 and to last for two weeks.

And it is hoped this will speed up traffic flow on the busy trunk road through the Lochaber town.

Trunk roads maintenance agency Bear Scotland said the existing traffic lights at the junction would be disconnected from 9am on April 17.

The works will then be carried out between 7pm and 6am to keep disruption to a minimum.

A Bear spokeswoman said: “The A82 will remain open during the day and overnight, however temporary traffic lights will be in place for safety of both road workers and motorists during working hours.

“Due to the nature of the works, a closure of Earl of Inverness Road will be required each night during the first week with a short, signed diversion in place.

“The road closure will be lifted during the day and the temporary traffic lights switched off, with the junction operating as a T-junction until the mini-roundabout can be installed.”

She added that, during the second week, the Earl of Inverness Road would operate under temporary traffic lights during working hours.

She said: “We’ve taken steps to minimise disruption to motorists in Fort William as much as possible by carrying out the works overnight, avoiding working at weekends and designing the works to avoid any closures of the A82.

“Our teams will look to complete the work as quickly and safely as they can.

“All diversion routes will be signed in advance and we would encourage motorists to plan ahead and leave a little extra time for their journeys.”
