An independent councillor has been elected to represent the Oban North and Lorn ward of Argyll and Bute Council.

Kieron Green was elected at stage four with 711 first preference votes following the by-election on Thursday.

Mr Green, aged 32, is now the youngest member of the council. He was employed as a technician at Oban High School and served his last day yesterday.

As an elected councillor he can no longer be an employee of Argyll and Bute Council.

He lives in Oban and is a member of the community council. Born in Hastings, his parents moved to the isle of Lismore 17 years ago when he was leaving school.

Mr Green studied Astro Physics at Edinburgh University.

He said: “My pledges have been to listen to the local people, protecting front line services.

“People across the whole area want to see more affordable housing. We have got a huge waiting list in Oban of people who are unable to get social housing, we need to find a solution to that.

“It is important to encourage investment so that we can get a wider range of businesses, providing a greater range of jobs, which will encourage more young people to stay in the area.”

The percentage poll was 33.46%. There were 2651 valid papers and 16 rejected papers.

David Pollard, LibDem, received 294 first preference votes, Breege Smyth, SNP, 1055 and Andrew Ross Vennard, Conservative, 591.
