A number of Highland ferry services have been cancelled today as high winds sweep in across the north of Scotland.

Services from Mallaig to Canna, Eigg, Muck, Rum and Armadale have all been cancelled while a number of other routes are subject to disruptions.

The cancellations come as the Met Office warns of heavy rain and high winds across the Highlands and Islands and much of the north-west today.

The Met Office’s Chief Forecaster said: “A very moist westerly airstream has been affecting Scotland since late Wednesday, and will persist into Friday.

“As this encounters the mountains of west and northwest Scotland, large amounts of rainfall are expected.

“Through the whole period, rainfall totals of 50-100 mm are expected quite widely, perhaps with up to 150 mm locally over the mountains.”

The Met Office warning reads: “Across the northwest Highlands and northwest Argyll, including the Isles of Mull and Skye, persistent rain will continue through much of the rest of Thursday and well into Friday.

“Please be aware of the likelihood of low impacts. For example, driving conditions are expected to be poor, with localised flooding on prone sections of road.

“The persistence of the heavy rain may also affect outdoor events and holiday camping activities in these areas.”
