A £10million retail park in the centre of Aviemore has finally been given full planning permission.
The development will bring a new Aldi supermarket and two other shops to the village, creating as many as 150 jobs.
It was unanimously backed by the Cairngorms National Park Athority planning committee earlier in the year.
Now final planning permission has been granted by Highland Council, which was asked to approve amendments to the exterior of the proposed building.
The revised application was approved by planning officers under delegated powers, meaning it did not go before a planning committee.
The site off Grampian Road was previously earmarked for a new Tesco but the supermarket giant walked away from the project last year.
The land was picked up by London and Scottish Investment, who are developing it under the name SC Aviemore Ltd.
They have been granted consent to split the larger supermarket into three units, understood to be earmarked for Aldi, an M&S food store and a Home Bargains.
Aviemore-based Councillor Bill Lobban called for the project to now move forward.
He said: “I’m delighted to see this plan going ahead.
“I’ve been supportive of this planning application since it was first mooted. It’s a great idea, not just for Aviemore but for the whole of Badenoch and Strathspey.
“We need the alternative shopping options that this will bring.
“I would now encourage the developer to get on with it as quickly as they can.”
The approved application allows the developer to divide the larger supermarket into three units with 60% of the floor space to be used for convenience goods and 40% for comparison goods.
The site is currently derelict and locals have long hoped for new shops to diversify the options currently available in the area.
Eleanor Mackintosh, the national park’s planning convener urged developers to build as “soon as possible” when they granted planning permission earlier this year.
London and Scottish were unavailable for comment.
