Oban charity seeks volunteer tradesmen to help provide new drop-in centre

An Oban charity is seeking volunteer tradesmen to help provide a dedicated drop-in centre in the town for cancer sufferers.

Oban Hospice has recently signed the lease on a property in Stevenson Street, where they intend to open the facility by July.

The Dove Centre will be open five days a week and support people with cancer at all stages of their journey – the idea being to provide a service similar to Maggie’s Centres.

Therapies, group sessions and one-to-one support will be available for everyone affected by the illness, including families and carers.

People with other life-limiting illness will also be welcome.

The drop-in centre has been made possible through more than 10 years of fundraising in the community to build up a pot of £600,000.

Community consultation days for the new centre have been scheduled for Wednesday, April 5 and Tuesday, April 11, between 2pm and 8pm.

The existing day hospice on Mondays, in Lorn and the Isles Hospital, will continue to run until the new centre opens.

Oban Hospice has also provided funding for improvements to accommodation for relatives of patients receiving palliative care in the hospital.

Yesterday a spokesman for the hospice said: “The centre is to be refurbished and we are grateful to Oban Electrics for their generous support. We would love to hear from other craftsmen who could volunteer their services.”

Community services co-coordinator Lucy Hunt will continue her valuable work in the community, but will be based in the new centre when it opens.

A centre co-ordinator will be appointed to support those attending the centre and to manage the activities on offer.

Applications are invited for the post and the closing date is March 24, 2017.

Anyone who can’t attend the community consultations can e-mail their thoughts and inquiries to enquiries@obanhospice.org.uk or connect through social media @ObanHospice.
