A Muir of Ord pensioner who told a court he is considering standing in May’s local government elections posted an abusive message on the Facebook page of his councillor.
David Allison, 67, of Balvaird Terrace, admitted behaving in an abusive or threatening manner between June 27 and July 1, 2016 by calling Councillor Angela Maclean a derogatory and sexualised name and stating she told lies during her duties as a local councillor.
Fiscal depute Ross Carvel told the court that Allison put an internet link on the councillor’s social media page which led to an offensive message.
“He called her Frau Angela Merkel, as well as a scumbag. He said that she was a liar, and he called on her to resign.”
Allison represented himself at the hearing and told Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood that he suffered from mental health problems.
“I am sorry for doing it. It was an aberration. I have stood for election many times in the past and may be standing on May 5. I believe in democracy and free speech.”
Sheriff Fleetwood told Allison: “That does not give you the right to call her what you did.”
He deferred sentence until September 14 for good behaviour.
