Temperatures could be as low as -12oC on Sunday as Storm Caroline leaves with a sting in her tail.

Yesterday saw gale force winds and 33ft waves battering the west coast and Highlands.

Forecasters are warning of snow and ice today and tomorrow before temperatures plummet on Sunday, which will be drier and with less wind.

Met Office meteorologist Emma Sharples said: “There is a snow and ice warning from midnight on Friday through to Saturday evening, with snow showers lying throughout that warning period.

“Snow cover of 2-5cm is quite likely with as much as 20cm in the north, maybe more on high ground.  You are likely to get drifting snow, blizzard conditions and ice. It will be feeling very cold with temperatures around 1-2oC, with windchill feeling colder, turning quite frosty overnight despite the winds.

“Orkney and Shetland have a yellow wind warning in place throughout all of Friday. Wind speeds will be between 70-80mph, especially in Shetland. We will still see gusts of 30mph in Inverness.”

She said that by tomorrow (Saturday) snow showers will be less frequent and will “slowly begin to die back”.

Ms Sharples added: “Sunday is the best day of the three for Scotland. There will be a few showers around coastal areas but Sunday will be mostly dry. It will still be very cold having had a cold Saturday night into Sunday morning. Where snow is lying it could be -10oC to -12oC in sheltered valleys and -4oC elsewhere.”
