Farmers and crofters have until May 15 to submit their SAF.

A north business is appealing for residents to come forward with historic photographs to mark their impending 60th anniversary.

Lewis Crofters Ltd will celebrate their milestone on July 13.

Now the firm is asking customers to share any old photographs showing the changes crofting has undergone since they first opened in 1958.

All the photographs collected will be used as part of an exhibition and a calendar.

A wide range of activities are scheduled to take place, including promotional offers, discounts and prizes.

The company started as a co-operative supported by the crofters of Lewis and Harris, and was set up to supply crofters with everything from animal feed to fencing staples. The range of products has grown over the years, and now includes clothing, tools, pet and garden supplies.

Manager Alasdair MacLean said: “Crofting has changed over the years and the range of materials we supply has changed with it.

“When Lewis Crofters first started, most islanders were actively working their crofts and would have taken home their peats with horses. We still supply core crofting materials for fencing, drainage, agriculture and stock feeding, but we are also supplying the requirements of many people who are now diversifying their crofting activities.”
