A number of train services in the Highlands have been disrupted today because of flooding.

The railway line between Kingussie and Aviemore is currently closed due to the conditions, Scotrail said.

The rail operator announced earlier today that disruption will last for the rest of the day, with replacement buses operating between Perth and Inverness.

Due to the issue, train services between Edinburgh and Glasgow and Inverness have been cancelled, delayed or terminated at and started back from Perth.

A statement from Scotrail this morning said: “We are dealing with a report of rain flooding the railway between Kingussie and Aviemore and the line is currently closed. Our staff are on site and report water levels are too high to allow us to operate our trains safely and heavy rain continues to fall in the area so at present we have no estimate when we will be able to run trains in this area.

“Our trains between Queen Street and Edinburgh to/from Inverness will terminate/start from Perth and we are trying to secure replacement transport to operate between Perth and Inverness.”

Passengers travelling between Perth and Inverness are advised they can travel via Aberdeen. This will add approximately two hours to your journey.

Meanwhile on the west coast a speed restriction has been put on the line between Garve and Strathcarron due to the heavy rain.

It meant train services between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh were delayed, with disruption lasting until midday.
