Update imminent on plans to run Oban Bay as a community venture

The latest updates on plans to form a statutory harbour authority to operate Oban Bay will be provided to the public next week.

The busy harbour is to be run as a trust port in a community venture if the plans are successful.

Oban Bay Management Group (OBMG) and the Oban Community Harbour
Development Association (OCHDA) are working together to explore its possible
development.

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday Feb 4 at 7pm in the Argyllshire Gathering Halls on Breadalbane Street.

Council powers in Oban Bay could be handed over to trust port

Representatives of the Northern Lighthouse Board, ferry operator CalMac, the owner of the ferry pier CMAL, Argyll and Bute Council and the stakeholder group of Oban Bay Marine Group will join the harbour development association.

Proposals for the establishment of a new Statutory Harbour Authority covering Oban Bay and its approaches will be outlined.

There will be the opportunity for members of the public to ask questions.

John MacAlister, chairman of OCHDA, said: “Previous public meetings have clearly shown that the community of Oban wants to be involved in the running of the harbour. Many other ports on the west coast are run as trust ports and these bring considerable benefit to the communities they serve: that’s what we want for Oban.

“We are keen to see a good turnout to bring everyone up to date and to hear their views and help us plan the next steps.”
