TV and radio presenter Lauren Laverne has singled out eating chips on a Ross-shire beach as one of the star attractions of visiting Scotland.

Laverne, who presents on BBC Radio 6 Music, and has fronted television programmes including 10 O’Clock Live for Channel 4, The Culture Show and coverage of the Glastonbury Festival for the BBC, says it is a highlight of her ideal British break.

The vegetarian recommended eating chips on Resemarkie Beach on the Black Isle and said she was “probably the only person who thinks the sleeper from Glasgow to London is sexy.”

She added: “I also love a road trip: the North Coast 500, Scotland’s ‘Route 66,’ is next on my list.

“The Highlands has the wildest, most mind-blowing scenery you can imagine.

“My husband and I have family from Ross-shire. When we’re there it’s impossible to believe it’s part of the same landmass as London.

“Eat chips on Resemarkie Beach, visit Strathpeffer Pump Room and treat yourself to some cashmere and a cream tea for two at Johnstons of Elgin.

“Make sure you listen to BBC Alba the whole way to immerse yourself in the Celtic vibes.”

Mrs Laverne revealed her admiration for the Highlands during an interview with Travel magazine.

In her previous career as a musician, Laverne was best known for being lead singer and sometime guitarist in punk pop band Kenickie, although her greatest chart success came when she performed vocals on Mint Royale’s single “Don’t Falter”.

Labour supporter Laverne became famous for her funny and acerbic interview style as for her music, making her a popular contestant on comedy panel shows such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Have I Got News for You, memorably referring to the Spice Girls as “Tory scum”.

The presented has also written a published novel entitled Candypop: Candy and the Broken Biscuits.

She is married to television producer and DJ Graeme Fisher and the couple live in Muswell Hill, London.
