Six men are due to appear in court after a brawl erupted in the middle of a Moray town at the weekend.

Chaotic scenes broke out in the heart of Keith on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood two groups of men became embroiled in a dispute, near a bookmakers on Mid Street, which turned violent when one was assaulted and had to be taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Police yesterday confirmed the wounded individual was not in a critical condition, and was among the six men, aged between 26 and 32, who had been charged.

They added the men were responsible for a “number of disturbances” in the Mid Street area at around 4.45pm on Saturday.

After the man was assaulted, further incidents were reported at the Commercial Hotel and in the Cameron Drive and Hay Crescent areas of the town.

The Buckie and Keith local policing team said that an “extensive” investigation took place following the series of incidents.

A spokeswoman added: “Local officers with assistance from the Divisional Alcohol and Violence Reduction Unit made extensive inquiries over the weekend.

“Our inquiries are still ongoing, and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed these alleged incidents or has information about them to contact the police.”

Officers anticipated that the men would appear at Elgin Sheriff Court yesterday, but a spokesman for the Crown Office said they were yet to appear.

Residents can contact the police on 101, or the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555111 if they want to remain anonymous.
