A Moray sports team has vaulted its way to its best-ever results at a national championship event.

Forres Gymnastics Club scooped two age-group champions at the Scottish beginner and intermediate tournament.

Abigail Taylor was triumphant in the 10 to 11-year-old category, while Freya Paterson saw off the competition to take top honours in the over 12s category.

Buoyed by boisterous support from friends and family, months of training paid off for all 11 girls from the club as they took home prizes.

And the delighted group proudly showed off their medal and ribbon haul yesterday.

Head coach Patsy Fraser-Mackenzie was thrilled to see the youngsters do so well.

She said: “We were up against teams from Glasgow and Edinburgh that have full dedicated facilities.

“We just work in a school gym, but all our kids won something under difficult circumstances – which was a big effort.

“We believe it doesn’t really matter what equipment you’ve got, it comes down to the coaching and dedication you put in.

“Gymnastics is all about the detail and they were marvellous.

“We’ve won at the championships before but never had results as good as this.”

The budding gymnasts wowed the judges after performing a spectacular array of acrobatic tricks in floor, vault and team events.

Holly Cumming won silver in the nine-year-old beginner category and was part of the team that came second in the same age group with Maisie Craig, Annmarie Taylor and Eilidh Robertson.

The 10 to 11-year-old team, featuring Abigail Taylor, Kelsey Martin, Faye Nichols and Quianah Fyvie also took home silver medals.

But the Forres gymnasts are not resting up after their success on the grand stage, and are hoping to repeat the recent results at the Highland floor and vault competition on Sunday.
